After the devastation of the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983, the Y.W.C.A. established what was to become the Belgrave South Community House to cater for the needs of the local community. The Community House is located in the Belgrave South Community Centre, a multi-purpose facility built in 1984 and used by the Community House, Belgrave South Primary School, Scouts, Guides and Cubs.
The building is owned by the Department of Education and administered by Belgrave South Community House.
In 1995 Belgrave South Community House became an independent Incorporated Body with local people managing the operation.
Belgrave South Community House works co-operatively with other local community houses including Kallista, Selby, Emerald, Olinda and Coonara. The house is affiliated with the Association of Neighbourhood Learning Centres (ANHLC) and the Community House Association of Outer Eastern Suburbs (CHAOS).
Funding is received from the Shire of Yarra Ranges, Department of Health Human Services, Adult Community and Further Eduction (ACFE) and sought from other agencies for one off projects where appropriate.
